This text and batch files are compliments of Bob Miller on Cypress Lake BBS!
If you like it, give us a call sometime BBS: 318-965-0307
FREEY GIVEN WITH NO WARRANTIES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED
Basically, use this information at your own risk
and ENJOY!
This text and batch files were written with the thought in mind that many
BBSs that would like to run Lord Net by Joesph Masters may not have FIDO,
InterNet, etc. available to them... ALL BBSs that can accept upload and
download files can now enjoy the wonderful works of Lord Net! :)
These files are Public Domain and are given without charge or cost in the
hopes of furthering the enjoyment brought to the public by smaller independ-
ant BBS systems.
Getting things going is not really invloved and should not take much trial
and error testing to get fine tuned. You should find the hardest part is
editing the batch file enclosed to coorespond to the Paths you are using
in your game setup. That should involve about 15 minutes.
LET'S GO !!!!
The first step is create a directory for the LordNet program and unzip all
of my files along with LordNet into it. You should use the latest version of
LORDNET and L.O.R.D. Unzip the new version of L.O.R.D. into it's own
directory. I would also recommend starting a new game of LORD in case
something gets setup wrong or an unforeseen mishap, you wont have 300
screaming LORD Fans yelling at you <G>.... Let's get started.!!!!
I suggest using the default paths I used so things will go easier and faster.
Create the following directories for your LORD and LordNet programs. You may
use other directories but will have a lot more editing to do in the batch
files...... Make these directories from DOS...
C:\LORD
C:\LNET
C:\LNET\TRANS
C:\LNET\DATA (used for FILES, IN and OUT)
C:\LNET\MAIL
C:\LNET\SCORES
Go to the LordNet directory and run LORDNET CONFIG. FIRST THING! Go to
CREATE NEW NET GAME! Then start with the Network Coordinator Menu. Setup
your sites or all "Nodes" that will be in the game including your BBS. Your
BBS needs to be the *FIRST* BBS in the site configuration. For the others,
you will need to know their BBS Name, City/State and the NODE NUMBERs will
be as follows. You can use other numbers but dont use any zeros by them-
selves and if you use a different numbering system, you will have a lot more
editing to do in the batch files. Setup up your BBS as the first site and
node address 1:1/1 This node number will be later translated to 01 or the
main hub. Setup the second site as node number 1:1/2 this one will later be
node 02. The third site will be node number 1:1/3 and so on. You can add
nodes later on. You may want to set everything up with just two or three
nodes and run some test games to start with to make sure everthing is working
ok... Setup the Alternate Address for each node similar to above. Setup
node 1 as 1:1/1 and node 2 as 1:1/2, etc. Some of the features won't work
until the game is registered. Check the LordNet documentation for more info.
on registering.
The next in line from the Lordnet Config menu is editing your Local Config.
These are mainly file locations on your BBS. Make sure the paths are all
correct. Although not required, I would setup a separate LORD game for the
InterBBS Game play from your standard game. Start it fresh with the latest
version available. LordNet needs it's own directory and if you place other
directories relating to LordNet under it as subdirectories, you will find
things more organized and easier to control as time goes on. You will need
a LNET/TRANS directory for taking incoming and outgoing packets. You will
need the LNET\DATA directory for data files. The LNET\MAIL directory is for
FIDO Mail and not used but may cause problems if it doesnt exist. Here is
a brief explaination of the directories. It is very important the directorys
refered to in the configuration as OUT and FILES directories are all the
*SAME* path. In other words, while editing your local config. the OUT and
FILES path configuration MUST BE THE SAME ACTUAL DIRECTORY or it wont work!
If you would like to have a format to follow you can use a copy of my local
configuration by COPYing !LORDNET.CFG LORDNET.CFG in the LNET directory. :)
The NOW let's go, from the Lordnet CONFIG MENU <E>DIT LOCAL CONFIGURATION
NOTE: *ALL* Path names must be formal and complete including the drive letter,
directory name and trailing backslash. RE: C:\LNET\TRANS\
1 - SysOp Name - Your Name
2 - BBS Name - Your BBS Name
3 - Lord Path - Path where the Legend of the Red Dragon program lives...<G>
4 - LNet Path - Path where the Lord Net Program is located.
5 - LNet IN - Temproary file path for the INcoming packets. *Must* be it's
own directory by itself.
6 - LNet OUT - Path for the OUTgoing packets. *Must* be the same as the
FILES directory.
7 - LNet Data - Path for LordNet data files, program configuration, Etc.
8 - LNet Mail - Path for LordNEt mail files. Not used *but* required.
9 - LNet FILES - Path for handling incoming and outgoing files. *MUST* be the
same path name as the OUT directory.
0 - Main Node - *YOUR* NODE Number. If you used my example 1:1/1 is the main.
A - Reg Number - Please register and place the registration number here...
B - Lost Attack- Number of days to continue to search for lost attacks.
C - NPC's Y/N - Allow NPC players in the game... I suggest *NOT!* Let's
keep it all real! :)
Some LORD games have NPC (fake) players in them... My opinion is, the
LordNet creates enough traffic in the game to remove the need for NPC players.
Unless you are in a real small town and only 5 people have modems, and two of
those are in credit card approval machines.... <G> you DON'T NEED NPCs
Your Node Number under Local Configuration (for the HUB) should be 1:1/1
Enter your registration number if you have one... Enter the number of days
the game should wait to declare an attack as lost. The longer the wait, the
longer the system has to keep track of attacks and the larger the data file
load on the system. Generally, the lost attacks should be set to 30% higher
than the number of days it would take the slowest BBS in your game to return
"response" to the attack. Example. If one BBS playing cannot take packets
from your BBS everyday then add time to allow the attack to get to his BBS,
be processed, find the player (who may not play everyday), attack him, be
processed by the "Node BBS" for return to the hub and get processed back
through the hub. I highly recommend ALL NODES to take and send packets
DAILY!!!! That would mean the Lost attacks could be set for 6 to 10 days and
minimumize the total file size of the game..... :)
Ok, we are getting close... Now <I>nstall LordNet to your LORD game defined
in the Local Configuration. If you play LORD, you should see a new IGM in
"Other Places" on Lord. Being on the downhill run, edit the BULLITEN.CFG
for the proper Bulletin file paths. Important, these filenames in the
BULLETIN.CFG file *must* be formal for the scores to work in the game. The
defaults are set for each file to be placed in the C:\LNET\SCORES directory.
I found the scores not to display in the LordNEt game if the complete path
and filename was not listed in the BULLETIN.CFG file. You may want to copy
the score files to other system Bulletins or Display screen to help promote
the new LordNet and please, use the LNET.ANS to advertise the new Networked
version of LordNet!
vvvv vvvvvvvvvvvv vvvvvvvvv
Small but *Important* step is to.... COPY HUBROUTE.CFG to ROUTE.CFG in your
C:\LNET directory. ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^
Edit the HUBEVENT.BAT file and read the help REMarks in the file. Mainly,
you need to edit the paths. You will also see where you need to make a File
Area available to those playing in your game to upload and download their
packets. The HUBEVENT.BAT is the nightly maintenance you will need to run
as the game "HUB" and "Coordinator". I found the DOS Edit command handy for
finding and changing directory names in the batch file. Any text processor
with [S]earch, find and [C]hange will be of help here.
I suggest you read the BBSSYSOP.DOC and the BBSEVENT.BAT files to become
familiar with what the BBSs playing in your game will need to do. They may
have questions. By reading / editing the HUBEVENT.BAT file and then assoc-
iating it with the BBSEVENT.BAT file. You will get a clearer picture of
what is going on... You will need to run your HUBEVENT.BAT file nightly and
let the other BBSs know what time they should call after the maintenance. I
try to give a 60 min. delay before letting them call in for packets as a time
buffer. I have incorporated in the HUBEVENT.BAT file a means for checking
if they have up/down loaded a packet since the last time you ran the maint-
enance. If they missed a day, no problem, the new action from other BBSs
and yours will be added to their packet. Encourage the playing BBSs to take
"packets" everyday to help keep things interesting to all players.
At this point, your BBS should be setup as the "Central Hub" for other BBSs
to call and exchange "Play Packets" on your BBS. There is really only a need
for ONE Hub but occasionally you may have a couple of BBSs long distance that
want to play and only make one call with combined packets. This is where I
leave you to your creativity.... With the basics outlined here, it shouldnt be
hard to do. You will have to tinker and test with different ROUTE.CFG files
for the playing BBSs.
BBSs that want to play in your game *shouldnt* really be given all the files
in this package. It may get very confusing to them. Give them the following
files and any help you can offer......
LNETxxxx.ZIP - Latest version of our beloved LordNet from Joe Masters :)
BBSEVENT.BAT - Nightly Node Event Batch - counter part of HUBEVENT.BAT
BBSROUTE.CFG - *COPY* this file to ROUTE.CFG for them (DONT OVERWRITE YOURS!)
Your route.cfg file is for *your hub* and needs not be changed.
ROUTE.CFG - See above...(the BBSROUTE.CFG is a spare copy. Read their Docs)
BBSSYSOP.DOC - Their instruction to help setup their LordNet Node
SITE.DAT - A copy of *your* SITE.DAT file. (see note)
Make a copy of your SITE.DAT from your C:\LNET directory.
LNET.ANS - A Banner Screen file to advertise the LordNet!
Note: the Site.dat file contains all the information about the
BBS nodes playing in the game. The SITE.DAT file will be enclosed
in each packet sent to each Node everyday and automatically copied
to their LORDNET directory to keep them upto date as you add new
nodes to the game.
Let's go edit the HUBEVENT.BAT file to correspond to your directories, etc.
If you have any questions or comments, please call Cypress Lake BBS at
318-965-0861 in Benton, La. I check my mail (most of the time) twice
daily. I will offer any assistance I can... Enjoy! Bob Miller :)
